You leave the riad early, while the medina is still quiet, and the road starts climbing almost immediately. The Tizi n Tichka crosses the High Atlas at 2,260 metres, switchback after switchback, with Berber villages holding on to the slopes and the valleys opening below at every turn. On the far side a local guide walks you through Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar above the Ounila river whose towers and granaries have stood in for a dozen other countries on film. Then Ouarzazate, the gateway to the south, and a second and much quieter mountain crossing at the Tizi n Tinififft, which drops you into the Draa. From Agdz the valley runs green and unbroken - palm groves, red kasbahs, a river you keep catching sight of - all the way to Zagora. In the late afternoon camels carry you out across the plain as the light turns, and the night is spent at the camp: dinner under the stars, music around the fire, and a sky with nothing in the way of it.

Wake for the sunrise, which is the reason to sleep out here rather than drive down and back in a day. Breakfast at the camp, then the camels take you back to the vehicle and the road turns north. You retrace the Draa - the same palm groves, the same kasbahs, but in morning light instead of afternoon, which changes them more than you would expect - then climb back over the Tinififft, through Ouarzazate, and past Ait Ben Haddou catching the sun from the other side. The Tichka comes last, in the late afternoon, with time for the stops you did not make on the way out. Drop-off is at your riad door in Marrakech in the evening.

Questions
Are the Zagora dunes the same as the ones in the photographs?
No, and this is the single most important thing to know before booking. Zagora is a stony desert with modest dunes, not the great sand sea. The towering dunes you have seen are Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, which is four hours further east and needs a third day. Zagora still gives you a camel trek, a camp, silence and an enormous sky. It does not give you a two-hundred-metre wall of sand. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you the wrong tour.
How much driving is there really?
About seven hours each way, 368 km, and it is the same road out and back because there is only one road. Day one leaves early. Day two leaves the camp after breakfast and reaches Marrakech in the evening. Fourteen hours of driving across two days is a lot, and we would rather you weighed that up now than discovered it on the Tichka.
Should I do this or the 3-day Merzouga tour?
If you have the third day, take Merzouga. The dunes are incomparably bigger, the camp is deeper in the sand, and the driving is spread across three days instead of two so no single day is as long. Choose Zagora only when two days is genuinely all you have - which for a lot of people on a short Marrakech trip it is.
What is the camp actually like?
Private ensuite tents with proper beds and a bathroom, not a mattress on the floor. Dinner is served under the stars and there is music around a fire afterwards. It is comfortable, but it is a camp in a desert: expect no wifi, limited electricity, and cold nights from November to February.
Is this tour private or shared?
Private. The vehicle and driver are yours alone for both days, with pick-up and drop-off at your riad door. Moroccan tourism licensing caps a 4x4 at four passengers, so parties of five or more travel in a premium minivan.
When should I not do this trip?
July and August. Zagora regularly passes forty degrees in high summer and the camp is genuinely uncomfortable in that heat. October to April is the right window, and the desert nights in December and January are cold enough to need a jacket.
How much do I pay to confirm?
A 50 percent deposit confirms the booking and the balance is due on arrival in Morocco. We confirm your date and the camp first, then send you a secure Stripe payment link.
Can the tour end at a different city or airport?
Yes. The route finishes in Marrakech, but we will drive you on to any airport in Morocco and that transfer is included in the price - Casablanca, Fes, Tangier or Agadir, or anywhere else you are flying from. Tell us your flight when you book so we can set the departure time: some airports are an hour or two from Marrakech and others are most of a day on the road, so the earlier we know, the better the last day works.
