The journey

Why this journey

11 days in Morocco on a private tour that starts in Casablanca and takes in Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes, Fes, the Ziz Valley, the Draa oases, a night at the remote Erg Chigaga dunes, then Agadir and Essaouira on the Atlantic, and two final nights in Marrakech with a sunrise balloon flight. 2,341 km, ten nights.

Eleven days is the point at which Morocco stops being a highlight reel and starts making sense as a country. You land in Casablanca and leave from Marrakech, and in between the landscape changes about six times: the Atlantic, then the green Rif and the blue alleys of Chefchaouen, then Roman columns standing in wheat fields, then the medieval density of Fes, then cedar forest, then a palm valley cut into red rock, then black stone desert, then the Draa oases, then a sand sea with no road into it. And then the ocean again, and three days at the end in Marrakech to stop moving. Nothing on this route is driven twice.

  • The full length of the country in one booking: Atlantic coast, Rif mountains, imperial cities, Middle Atlas, Sahara, and the ocean again
  • Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes and Fes - four of the great set pieces of the north, in the first three days
  • A night in a camp at Erg Chigaga, the remote erg that no paved road reaches
  • A sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the plains north of Marrakech, with breakfast on landing
  • Licensed local guides inside the medinas of Fes and Marrakech, the two places where a guide genuinely changes what you see
  • Two nights in Marrakech to finish: quad biking, the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and a hammam

What each day holds

Day 1
Arrival in Casablanca and the Atlantic corniche
Casablanca · no driving · Breakfast

You are met at the airport and driven into the city. The rest of the day is yours to sleep off the flight. In the evening there is time for a first walk along the Atlantic corniche and a look at the Hassan II mosque from the outside, its minaret standing over the water - a useful reminder, on day one, that Morocco is a country on the ocean before it is a country of desert.

Day 2
Rabat, then north into the Rif to the blue city
Chefchaouen · 334 km · 5 h · Breakfast

North along the coast to Rabat, the capital, where the Kasbah of the Udayas sits above the mouth of the Bou Regreg with its own blue-and-white lanes, and the unfinished Hassan Tower stands beside the royal mausoleum. Then inland and up, out of the coastal plain and into the green Rif, until Chefchaouen appears in the late afternoon - a town painted blue from the doorsteps to the rooftops, folded into the side of a mountain. The night is spent in a riad inside it.

Day 3
Roman Volubilis, imperial Meknes, and into Fes
Fes · 260 km · 4.1 h · Breakfast

A slow morning in the blue alleys before they fill up, then south. Volubilis comes first: a Roman city standing in wheat fields, its columns and mosaic floors open to the sky, with the arch and the main street still legible after eighteen centuries. Then Meknes, and the enormous Bab Mansour gate into the old imperial capital. Fes arrives in the late afternoon - and Fes takes a moment to understand, because there is nothing else quite like it.

Day 4
The Fes medina, the cedar forest, and down to Midelt
Midelt · 205 km · 4 h · Breakfast and dinner

The morning belongs to a licensed local guide, and it should. The Fes medina has thousands of lanes and no logic a visitor can read alone: you go to the Al-Qarawiyyin quarter, look down on the tanneries from a terrace, and step into the medersas with their carved cedar and tilework. In the afternoon the road climbs into the Middle Atlas, through Ifrane with its alpine roofs and then the cedar forest above Azrou, where Barbary macaques come down to the roadside. The night is in Midelt, a quiet town under the High Atlas.

Day 5
The Ziz gorges, the black desert, and a kasbah village
Nkob · 437 km · 5 h · Breakfast and dinner

The long day, and the one that changes the trip. South from Midelt the road drops through the Ziz gorges and opens onto a palm grove that runs to the horizon, one of the largest in Morocco. Then Errachidia, Erfoud with its fossil workshops, and Rissani, an old caravan crossroads of ksour and dry riverbeds. West from there the ground turns to black stone: dark gravel plains against pale mountains, and almost nothing else for an hour. Nkob comes at the end of it, a kasbah village under the ridge of Jebel Saghro.

Day 6
Down the Draa to the sand sea at Erg Chigaga
Erg Chigaga · 309 km · 5 h · Breakfast and dinner

Into the Draa. The valley widens through Agdz, where the palm groves and red kasbahs begin, then Zagora, the old departure point for the caravans that crossed to Timbuktu. At Tamegroute you stop for the ancient library and the green pottery, then run south to M Hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the sand. There the vehicle changes: the camp’s own vehicles take over for the crossing into the erg. You arrive in time for a camel ride into the dunes at sunset, dinner under the stars, and music around the fire.

Day 7
Sunrise on the dunes, then west to the Atlantic
Agadir · 417 km · 7 h · Breakfast

Wake for sunrise on the dunes, which is the reason to sleep out here. Then the desert crossing back out to Foum Zguid, where the asphalt starts again and the desert flattens into open plain. The road runs west through Taznakht, a weaving town known for its geometric rugs, then Taliouine and the saffron terraces, and Taroudant with its long ochre walls. Agadir and the Atlantic arrive in the evening. It is a long day, and it is the price of Chigaga.

Day 8
The surf coast to the ramparts of Essaouira
Essaouira · 194 km · 3.6 h · Breakfast

A short and deliberately easy day. Morning views over the bay from the Kasbah hill, then north up the coast road through Taghazout, a surf village of boards and cafes, and Imsouane, a fishing bay with a famously long wave and a cluster of blue boats. The road stays above the ocean most of the way. Essaouira arrives in the afternoon: ramparts, gulls, a working harbour, and a medina of white walls and blue shutters that is easy to walk after four days of driving.

Day 9
Across the argan plains to Marrakech, and quad bikes at the edge of the city
Marrakech · 185 km · 2.9 h · Breakfast

A last morning on the ramparts, then east across the argan plains, where goats really do stand in the trees, and into the red city. The afternoon is spent on quad bikes on the tracks and palm groves at the edge of Marrakech - dust, rocky ground, and a couple of hours of not sitting in a car. The night is in a riad inside the medina.

Day 10
A balloon at first light, the medina on foot, and a hammam
Marrakech · no driving · Breakfast

Up before dawn for the balloon. You lift off over the plains north of the city as the light arrives, with the High Atlas along the whole southern horizon, and land to a Berber breakfast in a tent. Back in the city a licensed guide takes you through the medina on foot - the Koutoubia minaret, the courtyards and painted ceilings of the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs, sealed up for two centuries and only rediscovered in 1917. The day ends the way a Moroccan day should: a traditional steam bath, and a massage.

Day 11
Departure
no driving · Breakfast

A private transfer to Marrakech airport for your flight. If you are flying out of Casablanca, Fes, Tangier or Agadir instead, we drive you there and the transfer is included.

Where you stay

Chosen for where they are, not only their stars

Casablanca
4-star hotels

Casablanca1 night

A four-star hotel in the city, chosen for a short transfer from the airport so the first evening is not spent in traffic.

Chefchaouen
3 to 4-star riads

Chefchaouen1 night

A riad inside the blue medina itself, so the alleys are outside the door at first light before the day visitors arrive.

Fes
4-star riads and hotels

Fes1 night

A four-star riad or hotel within walking distance of the medina gates - the difference between seeing Fes and staying in it.

Midelt
3 to 4-star hotels

Midelt1 night

A comfortable mountain hotel at the foot of the High Atlas. Midelt is a staging post rather than a destination, and this is an honest, restful stop.

Nkob
Kasbah guesthouse

Nkob1 night

A kasbah guesthouse in a village of earthen towers under Jebel Saghro. There is no four-star hotel here, and the guesthouse is far better than one would be.

Erg Chigaga
Premium desert camp

Erg Chigaga1 night

A premium camp deep in the erg, with private ensuite tents, proper beds, dinner under the stars and a fire circle. There is no road to it.

Agadir
4-star hotels

A four-star hotel on the bay, with the beach promenade a short walk away.

Essaouira
3 to 4-star riads

Essaouira1 night

A riad inside the walled town, a few minutes from the ramparts and the fishing port.

Marrakech
4-star riads

Marrakech2 nights

Honest fit

Is this the right journey for you?

Choose it if

  • You have close to two weeks and want the whole country, not one corner of it
  • You want the Sahara, the Atlantic, the Rif and the imperial cities under a single booking with one driver
  • You would rather finish with easy days in Marrakech than fly home straight from the desert

Consider another route if

  • You dislike long days in a car - day seven out of the desert to Agadir is about seven hours
  • You want to unpack once; this route changes hotel nine times
  • You have fewer than ten full days on the ground, in which case a shorter loop will serve you better
Best season

March to May and September to November are the best all-round months for a route that crosses both the Sahara and the Atlantic; the desert nights are coldest from December to February

Questions

Before you book

Straight answers about the route, the hotels and the deposit. Anything else, ask us on WhatsApp.

How much driving is there, honestly?

2,341 km over eleven days, and it is not spread evenly. Day seven is the long one at 417 km and about seven hours out of the desert to Agadir. Day five is 437 km and about five hours from Midelt to Nkob, and day six is 309 km and five hours down the Draa. Days one, ten and eleven have no driving at all, day nine is under three hours, and day eight is three and a half.

Why Erg Chigaga and not Merzouga?

Because no paved road reaches Chigaga. The last stretch is a crossing over sand and piste in the camp’s own vehicles, which is why the camps there are far apart and you can stand on a dune at sunrise without seeing another person. Merzouga is easier to reach, has more camps and more visitors. On an eleven-day trip you have the time to do the harder one, so we send you to the harder one.

What exactly happens in the last three days?

Day nine you drive in from Essaouira and spend the afternoon quad biking on the tracks and palm groves at the edge of the city. Day ten starts before dawn with a hot-air balloon flight over the plains north of Marrakech and a Berber breakfast when you land, then a licensed guide walks you through the medina - the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs - and the day finishes with a traditional steam bath and a massage. Day eleven is a private transfer to the airport.

Is the balloon flight guaranteed?

The flight itself is included and paid for, but no operator anywhere flies a balloon in high wind or poor visibility, and that call is made at dawn on the day by the pilot. If your flight is cancelled for weather we move it to the following morning where the schedule allows, and if it cannot be flown at all it is refunded. We will not tell you the weather is guaranteed, because nobody can guarantee it.

Are all the hotels four or five star?

No, and we prefer to say so plainly. Casablanca, Fes, Agadir and Marrakech are four-star hotels and riads. Chefchaouen and Essaouira are riads of three to four stars inside the old towns, which is the right trade: position beats a star rating in both places. Midelt is a comfortable mountain hotel and Nkob is a kasbah guesthouse, because in those two towns a four-star hotel does not exist. Erg Chigaga is a premium camp with private ensuite tents.

Is this tour private or shared?

Private throughout. The vehicle and the driver are yours alone for eleven days, and the vehicle is chosen for the size of your group. For the desert crossing to Erg Chigaga, the camp’s own vehicles take over.

Can the route be reversed, or start in Marrakech?

Yes. Run in reverse it starts in Marrakech and ends in Casablanca, which suits travellers who fly into Marrakech. The order of the days changes but the content does not, except that the balloon flight and the Marrakech days move to the start. Tell us which airport you are flying into and we will build it around that.

What is not included that I should budget for?

Lunches, drinks, tips, and entrance fees to the monuments. Volubilis, the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs each charge a modest entry fee paid on the day. It is a small amount against the cost of the trip, and we would rather list it than surprise you with it.

How much do I pay to confirm?

A 50 percent deposit confirms the booking and the balance is due 5 days before departure. We confirm your dates and the availability of the camp and the balloon first, then send you a secure Stripe payment link.

Can the tour end at a different city or airport?

Yes. The route finishes in Marrakech, but we will drive you on to any airport in Morocco and that transfer is included in the price - Casablanca, Fes, Tangier or Agadir, or anywhere else you are flying from. Tell us your flight when you book so we can set the departure time: some airports are an hour or two from Marrakech and others are most of a day on the road, so the earlier we know, the better the last day works.
