The road from Marrakech to Ouarzazate crosses the High Atlas on the N9 and the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres. Ouarzazate is about 200 km south-east of Marrakech by road (196 km on the shortest route), roughly 4 hours of driving without stops. This guide covers the drive, the stops worth making, the town at the end of it and how far everything is from there.
How far is Ouarzazate from Marrakech, and how long is the drive?
Ouarzazate lies about 200 km south-east of Marrakech on the N9. Pure driving time is about 4 hours. With photo stops, a coffee break and lunch, most travellers take 5 to 6 hours over the crossing.
The road leaves the Haouz plain at Aït Ourir, climbs through the mountain village of Taddert and reaches the pass roughly halfway. The whole route is paved. The bends, the trucks and the views set the pace, not the distance.
Day one of our 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech crosses the Tizi n’Tichka, stops at Aït Benhaddou and continues east to the Dadès Valley, about 344 km in all.
What is the Tizi n’Tichka pass like?
The Tizi n’Tichka is the highest point of the N9, at 2,260 metres. Below it, terraced fields and earthen villages cling to the slopes, and on clear days the view reaches across the main ridge of the High Atlas.
Snow can affect the pass in winter, and the gendarmerie closes the road when it is unsafe. At that time of year, check conditions the evening before and keep an early start flexible.
A little south of the pass, a side road branches east to Telouet, the former stronghold of the Glaoui family. Our Telouet Kasbah guide explains the detour and the valley road that continues to Aït Benhaddou.
Where should you stop between Marrakech and Ouarzazate?
These are the stops worth planning for, from north to south:
- Taddert, the last village before the final climb to the pass.
- The Tizi n’Tichka itself, at 2,260 metres, for the view back over the range.
- The Telouet turn-off, for travellers with time for the Glaoui kasbah.
- Aït Benhaddou, the earthen ksar listed by UNESCO, about 30 km before Ouarzazate.
Aït Benhaddou deserves at least an hour on foot. Our Ouarzazate and Aït Benhaddou guide covers the ksar, its film history and the best light for photographs.
What is there to see in Ouarzazate?
Ouarzazate is the capital of Ouarzazate Province, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, and stands at about 1,150 metres on a wide desert plateau. Most travellers use it as a lunch stop or a first night, but the town rewards half a day.
The Taourirt Kasbah stands in the centre of town. The Glaoui family took it over and enlarged it in the 19th century, and its restored section is open to visitors every day.
Atlas Studios lies about 5 km west of the centre, on the road back towards Marrakech. Founded in 1983 by Mohamed Belghmi, the studios run guided tours of sets built for films shot in the region.
The Fint oasis is a palm-fringed village about 10 to 12 km south of Ouarzazate. It is reached by a rough, unpaved track, so plan a slow drive and a short walk along the river.
Half a day covers the kasbah and the studios. Add two or three hours if you also want to see Fint.
How far is Ouarzazate from Aït Benhaddou, Skoura and Boumalne Dadès?
Ouarzazate is the crossroads of the south. From the town, the N10 runs east through the oases towards the Dadès Valley and Tinghir. These are the distances by road:
- Aït Benhaddou: about 30 km north-west, around 45 minutes.
- Skoura: about 40 km east on the N10, around 45 minutes.
- Kelaat M’Gouna: about 90 km east on the N10, around 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Boumalne Dadès: about 110 km east-north-east on the N10, around 2 hours.
Our guide to Skoura and the Valley of Roses covers the two oases on that road. The Dadès Gorges visitor guide picks up where it ends.
Does Ouarzazate have an airport?
Yes. Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) lies a couple of kilometres north-west of the town centre, a 5 to 10 minute taxi ride. Its main scheduled link is with Casablanca.
Flying in can save the mountain crossing, but you then miss the Tizi n’Tichka and Aït Benhaddou on the way. Most travellers prefer to drive in and, if time is short, fly out.
When is the best time to drive from Marrakech to Ouarzazate?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, roughly March to May and September to November. The light on the mountains is clear, and days in Ouarzazate are warm rather than hot.
Summer days in Ouarzazate are very hot, so plan sightseeing for the morning and late afternoon. Winter days are mild in the valley but nights are cold, and snow can slow the pass.
How does the drive fit a trip to the Sahara?
The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 km, or 9 to 10 hours of driving. Ouarzazate lies a little over a third of the way, which makes it the natural lunch stop on the first day.
Most desert trips cross the Tichka in the morning, visit Aït Benhaddou, then continue on the N10 to spend the first night in the Dadès Valley. Our Marrakech to Merzouga road trip guide details every stage after Ouarzazate.
